The winery was founded in 1967 in rzig by Karl Erbes and is now run by his son Stefan Erbes, who joined the family business in 1984 and took over in 2002. The winery cultivates 5 hectares of vineyard with own-rooted vines, some of which are 70 to 80 years old. The vines grow in the steep slopes of rziger Wrzgarten, Erdener Treppchen, and Erdener Prlat, requiring manual labor for all vineyard work. The winery focuses on selective grape harvesting and maintaining low yields for quality production.

The “rziger Wrzgarten” is internationally recognized as a specialty among the Moselle vineyards. It is one of the steepest sites in the Middle Moselle and therefore enjoys very long periods of sunshine. It consists of red sandstone and slate soil, which results in a very special character with lush, spicy, fruity aromas and a particularly full-bodied wine. 100% of Erbes vines are ungrafted and they manage to draw water and nutrients from the depths of the soil even in very dry years. This combination of medium to deep, very stony slate soils and a pure south-facing location with intense sunlight results in a wine that is unique worldwide, with a full-bodied, fruity character and an intense mineral aftertaste.
