Volpaia sits on a hilltop just north and west of the town of Radda and is considered a Radda producer. You can see it a mile or 2 away as the crow flies from the Montevertine vineyards well above those vines up a large and steep hillside. Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified village on the Florence-Siena border. Unlike Brolio, Meleto and other Chianti-area castles, Volpaia is a terra murata, a walled village. The vineyards are predominantly in alberese and galestro sandstone soils rich in ancient seabed fossils, suitable for the production of elegant and long-lived reds. Volpaia is committed to organic farming practices in all of its estate vineyards and is a leader in the region for organic farming certifications.
