This stunning Charanda from Uruapan is distilled from 100% fresh-pressed cane. It’s softer and a touch less funky than many of its Caribbean cousins, but it is one of the best examples of the texture, depth of flavor, and nuance available from cane spirit. It has a lovely, fresh-baked bread quality to it and is terrific on its own or in cocktails.
For over a century, the Pacheco family has been making some of the finest Charanda in Uruapan, Michoacn, Mexico. The brand is actually named for the city of Uruapan, due to the Pachecos longstanding history in the community. In 1907, Don Cleofas Murgia Pacheco transitioned from distilling mezcal to the more immediately profitable model of distilling sugarcane.
Miriam Pacheco carries on the tradition of making Charanda Uruapan and runs the family business today. The familys desire to protect and preserve the regions tradition of cane distillation is best exemplified by the efforts of Fernando Pecheco (Miriams brother) to create the D.O. protecting Charanda, in 2013.
Tasting Notes
This blend of 50% column-distilled molasses and 50% long-fermented pot-distilled cane juice & piloncillo strikes a lovely balance between the terroir-specific character of the Pachecos estate-grown sugarcane and an aromatic funkiness reminiscent of Jamaican rum. 46% ABV
