The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur from Ren Leclerc is a finely judged expression of one of the appellations most distinctive Premier Cru vineyards. Lying just south of the village and adjacent to Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, Clos Prieur benefits from its prime mid-slope position and a complex mix of thin limestone soils over clay and marl. This terroir produces Pinot Noir with both depth and aromatic finesseoften seen as a bridge between Gevreys muscular style and the more floral elegance of neighboring Chambolle-Musigny.
The domaines old vines, averaging 40+ years of age, are tended sustainably, with low yields ensuring concentration and balance. The 2022 vintage, marked by warm, dry conditions and cool nights, delivered grapes with ripe tannins, deep color, and remarkable aromatic purity. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and cellar.
In the winery, the fruit is fully destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in open vats. Extraction is gentleusing a mix of remontage and light punch-downsto preserve fine tannin texture and aromatic lift. The wine is then matured for 1618 months in French oak barrels, around one-third new, which lends subtle spice and structure without dominating the terroirs voice.
In the glass, the 2022 Clos Prieur shows a deep garnet hue and an expressive bouquet of black cherry, wild raspberry, rose petal, and a touch of sweet spice, underpinned by earthy and mineral notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and firm yet refined tannins. The finish is long, savory, and mineral-laced, with the promise of graceful development over the next 1215 years.
A wine of both structure and charm, this Clos Prieur is an ideal partner for dishes such as roasted duck, venison, or a classic boeuf bourguignon, and will shine with careful cellaring.
