93pts Wine Advocate (William Kelley)
The 2023 Savigny-ls-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Serpentires has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of cherries, sweet berries, orange zest, petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it’s generous and charming.
The 2023 vintage is a solid success for Domaine Pierre Guillemot, delivering a lighter, more immediate style than in 2022. As readers will remember, this seven-hectare estate is rather classical, the reds fermenting in wooden tanks with temperature control, followed by levage with modest percentages of new wood. Whole clusters increasingly play a role here. The wines are remarkably consistent, surpassing expectations in challenging years and fully delivering in more propitious vintages.
91-93 Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy– The yield here was no more than 45 hl/ha. As always the wine from Serpentires is a little paler. A bit more floral on the nose, quite elegant, showing the whole bunches a touch more. Some alpine strawberry, plush and satisfying throughout, with a notably long finish on the crushed strawberry note. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Oct 2024.
TKs notes on 2023 vs. 2022
We have not tasted these 2023s yet but so far with about 40 or so 2023s under our belts tasted the vintage seems fresher in style for 2023 over 2022, though they still have really good fruit concentration and densities, just brighter. For me this bodes very well for the whites that are very classic in style, with powerful textures and driving energy from the acidity, but they also don’t feel sharp, just more energetic and stacked with density that are built to age from the best village level wines and up. The reds are fresh, bright, and more high-toned with more perceptive acidity and tannic structure. Densities and fruit concentration are great, but maybe a touch less than 2022 and more red than dark red fruits, though not strictly so. Ageability is great for both styles/colors in both 2022/2023, it just matters more the style that you prefer. So, in general so far the whites seem more classic than the 2022s, while the reds are also classic with excellent quality. The big difference between both vintages is not a matter of quality, it just comes down to preference of styles. (*Also understand you need to take into context the house style at each domaine)
