Every year this is my favorite white wine from the island. Complex, rich, mineral, with density and tension that in youth leaves the wine begging for some cellar time. This vintage is warmer, and more primary than I have had in the past from previous vintages, which allows you to get into the wine now, but it should age really well into what is usually one of the best bottles of wine from Santorini.
On the ancient plain of Oia, in the island of Santorini, the winery of DOMAINE SIGALAS can be found. Here, the most vibrant variety of the Mediterranean zone, the Santorini Assyrtiko as well as the Aidani, Athiri, Mandilaria and the Mavrotragano are put to the best use possible, and with the proper respect to their organoleptic characteristics, the quality wines are produced which receive acclaim in international competitions, both in Greece and abroad.
100% Assyrtiko
Vineyard: Selected blocks spread over the island from basket-trained vines averaging 60 years of age. Handpicked, strict grape sorting
Grapes are harvested by hand from the vineyards. They spend a night in a refrigerator at cold temperatures. Next day whole-cluster sorting and pressing. Cold maceration at low temperatures for 1-2 days, then the must is transferred into the stainless steel where fermentation takes place.
The wine is aged for 3 months in stainless steel tanks on its lees then bottled.
Vegan certified
Alcohol by Volume 14%
Total Acidity 5.5 gr/lt
pH 3.29
Our Tasting Note: On the nose, austere, with acidity being the backbone of the wine, intense minerality, citrus fruit, riper, showing some riper stone and tropical notes. The mineral core is buried in there, taste as a result of Santorinis unique terroir, flavors of citrus fruits and peach. Petrol and honey hints appear in aged Assyrtiko. Long lasting aftertaste
94pts Wine Advocate (2023 Vintage, 2024 NYR)
This is the estate’s flagship wine with 100,000 bottles produced (representing 70% of the winery total). The Domaine Sigalas 2023 Santorini Assyrtiko delivers marine influences with salty overtones around a core of honeydew melon and white peach. The wine’s volume is driven mostly by its fruit flavors, but there is a subtle hint of sweetness to close. It sees stainless steel only. What makes this wine stand apart, however, is the impressive intensity of the mouthfeel and its lingering concentration. That rich fruit shows solid runway for bottle aging. Drink Date: 2024 – 2035
This iconic Greek estate definitively changed hands in 2020, passing from its legendary founder Paris Sigalas to the Boutaris family (of Kir-Yianni in northwestern Greece). The Boutaris family become a shareholder of the Santorini estate in 2011 and controlling partner in 2020. Paris Sigalas founded the estate with a partner in 1991 and built the existing winery just outside of Oia in 1998. It counts about 40 hectares of vineyards between estate and leased vineyards and has an average annual production of 200,000 bottles. Stellios Boutaris is CEO and chairman of the board today.
