For our next wine well head to Chile! This wine comes from a plot of old ungrafted vines planted in 1964 in Alto Maipo, and is farmed without irrigation. There is 15% of Syrah in the blend and the wine is aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new. Tobacco spices and cherry notes merge with classic blackcurrant and a little glimpse of floral. This wine is a big and chocolate-forward with plenty of barrel components adding char and nutmeg-like spice. The fruit is concentrated and deep, and the wine finishes with a bittersweet twist of liquorice and pepper from tight, spicy tannins, and high acidity.
