94-96 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
5 Star rating Jasper Morris (Highest Rating achievable)

Mid lemon in colour. A broader bouquet on the nose compared to Clos, as if Moutonne had thought about moving further south, while declining to abandon its Chablis roots. A suggestion of honeysuckle alongside the marine elements. Very skilfully poised on the palate. Fresh and racy at the finish with good flesh nicely tamed. Impressively persistent. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2024.

Charles Curtis MW
“This classic wine boasts moreish aromas of Mirabelle plums touched with honey, ‘the beginning of apricot and quince’ according to director Louis Gimonnet. The palate has marvellous concentration and depth of flavour, balanced acidity and superb elegance and finesse. This unique 2.35ha monopole lies in an amphitheatre, mostly in Grand Cru Vaudsir but overlapping into Les Preuses. The grapes are hand-harvested, gently crushed, fermented in stainless steel tank and old cask (25%) before an extended maturation.”

Impressively reductive, it took some work to get this to show it’s stuff. Lemon-lime intensity eventually came to the fore, followed by toasted hazelnuts, sweet spice and crumble. The tugging texture offers reassuring structure as this has the stuffing to age well. Give it at least 5 to 6 years.

91-93 Burghound (Allen Meadows)
Moderate though not invasive oak influence still allows the overtly floral and softly exotic aromas that display only a modicum of typicity to be appreciated. There is both good precision and refinement to the attractively vibrant middle weight flavors that offer good power on the bitter zest-inflected finish where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. 2031+

The 2023 vintage, shaped by Matthieu Mangenots expertise, reflects a shift from the previous year with less use of whole bunch fermentation, focusing instead on purity and clarity of fruit. Across the range, the wines showcase impressive structure, vibrant acidity, and nuanced expressions of their respective terroirs, promising early approachability for some and significant aging potential for others.

Formerly owned by the monks of the Pontigny Abbey, Monopole du Domaine Long-Depaquit “Moutonne” is a plot that is sheltered within a natural amphitheatre at the heart of the Grand Crus, the historic part of the Chablis vineyards that dates back over one thousand years.

Located in both “Vaudsir” (95%) and “Preuses” (5%), this south/south-east facing plot with its ideal location and shape enable it to capture all of the sun’s rays. The steep slope (nearly 40%) in the central part of the plot protects the vines from the North winds. Traversed by a wall, the lower part of the plot yields wines that are rich and structured while the grapes hailing from the upper part lend the blend its floral aspect and tautness.
