Our Tasting Note
A powerful wine texturally, this is a very good example ofwhat top Loire rose from Pinot Noir on the kimmeridgean soils of the Loire’s best Sauvignon terroirs can achieve. Electric in personality, the intensity of this wine is only matched by the depth and tension it delivers in spades!
Light pink in color. The nose is med+ with notes of citrus, chalk, and saline, citrus and red berries register in the background. The palate is medium bodied, maybe slightly med+. Showing remarkable tension and acidity (med+), the juicy citrus and red berry fruit are balanced by citrus zests and a fine, stony minerality that reflects the Kimmeridgian soils of Menetou-Salon. The refreshing backbone of acidity stretches into the finish long and clean, with a whisper of saline energy trailing on.
Pairing Suggestion: Perfect alongside dishes like summer salads, grilled salmon, sushi, or a simple roast chicken with herbs. Add the classic regional chevre goat cheeses to any of these and be prepared to have your mind blown by such a simple yet effective pairing!
Grape:Pinot Noir100%
Winemaking:Very simple, direct press traditional rose winemaking. After the juice settles it spontaneously fermentsin steel tanks. Aging takes place on the fine lees in stainless steel for one year (LONG for a rose but is why this is a 2023), with total sulfur hovering at a modest 60 milligrams per liter.
Philipppe Gilberts ros, 100% Pinot Noir sourced from vines in Parassy, is replete with a sense of vinosity that is nearly outside category. The thing that really thrills in this wine is its energy, a bracing kinetic drive that feels like biting into cool, fresh, ripe fruit right off the vine. This Ros is vinified using the direct press method following the same principles as the process used for making the white wine.
Domaine Philippe Gilbert has long been a reference point in Menetou-Salon, farming their vineyards biodynamically to produce wines of purity and finesse. The Ros 2023 is crafted entirely from Pinot Noir grown on limestone-clay soils typical of the appellation, which lend both bright fruit and a saline edge.
Vinification & Technical Notes:
Grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed, with fermentation carried out using indigenous yeasts at cool temperatures to preserve aromatics. The wine ages briefly on fine lees in stainless steel, enhancing texture and freshness, before being bottled young for vibrancy.
Terroir:
The domaines vineyards lie on Kimmeridgian marl and limestone soilssimilar to nearby Sancerreimparting both aromatic lift and mineral tension to the Pinot Noir. The cooler continental climate ensures freshness and balance, even in a ripe vintage like 2023.
Serving & Pairing:
Serve well-chilled (810C). A perfect match for summer salads, grilled fish, charcuterie, or simply as an apritif.
