Our Tasting Note
A medium lemon yellow core, star bright edges. The nose is pronounced with notes of mixed citrus, green apple, and pear, chipped chalky rocks, a touch of white floral blossoms, and a fine edge of leesy creamy notes. The medium bodied wine has med/med+ acidity, while the palate is pronounced showing the juicy citrus to white orchard fruits, with the chalky mineral stoniness is buried in the fruit and the lovely viscosity from the depth this wine has attained. Long, pleasing and persistent. Excellent!
Grape:Sauvignon Blanc100%
Winemaking:Very simple, direct press traditional rose winemaking. After the juice settles it spontaneously fermentsin steel tanks. Aging takes place on the fine lees in stainless steel for 12-18 months (depending on the vintage), with total sulfur hovering at a modest 60 milligrams per liter.
Planted 25 years ago on a clayey-limestone terroir dating back to the Kimmeridgian, the vines extend on average over 10 or so hectares divided among six plots. Philippes stellar Menetou-Salon Blanc is unfailingly mineral-driven, yet without the straitjacketed citrusy rigidity more conventionally and commercially minded Loire Sauvignon Blanc frequently displays. A sense of lusciousnessone that is distinct from viscosityprovides a texturally attractive counterpoint to the rapier-like acidity, and nods ever so glancingly to its upstream Chenin-Blanc-based cousins, yet this is unmistakably Kimmeridgian-grown Sauvignon Blanc through and through. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, and aging takes place on the fine lees in stainless steel for one year, with total sulfur hovering at a modest 60 milligrams per liter.
Domaine Philippe Gilbert has become one of the most respected estates in Menetou-Salon, producing elegant, terroir-driven wines through certified biodynamic farming. The Menetou-Salon Blanc 2022 is made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc grown on the domaines limestone-clay soils, offering a pure and precise expression of this Loire appellation.
Vinification & Technical Notes:
Hand-harvested grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation takes place with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness. The wine rests on fine lees for several months, enhancing mouthfeel and aromatic complexity, before bottling with minimal intervention.
Terroir:
The vineyards sit on Kimmeridgian marl and limestone, the same ancient soils found in neighboring Sancerre, which impart a chalky minerality and precision to the wine. The cooler continental climate of Menetou-Salon ensures vibrant acidity and aromatic lift even in warmer years like 2022.
Serving & Pairing:
Serve chilled at 1012C. A versatile pairing with oysters, goat cheese, grilled white fish, asparagus, or light poultry dishes.
