Coming in hot off some truly excellent past releases, the Oddero 2020 Barolo has a pretty mineral content with pencil shaving, crushed stone and wet soil that meets forest berry and underbrush. The wine hits on all cylinders, and there is good aromatic balance. It delivers a punch of bright fruit and crushed rose that gives way to pulverized stone. For a base Barolo, this is one of your best buying options. Fruit is blended from Bricco Chiesa and Capalot in La Morra and Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto.

Mariacristina Oddero is currently working to enlarge her historic winery that was built at the beginning of the 1800s. That space is now used for aging her reds. She has also introduced a new wine, a Barolo Monvigliero, from a 0.7-hectare parcel acquired in Verduno in 2017. Starting in 2023, Oddero also unveiled two Vermouthsa red one based on Nebbiolo and a white one based on Timorasso from the Colli Tortonesi.

The wine exhibits a distinctive herbal character, laced a lively pepper spice offering a mix of dried red fruits with an electric edge. On the palate, darker fruits emerge that then lean into a tar-like, earthy quality delivering depth and complexity in perfect harmony. Youthful tannins sit firmly on the palate with lifted acidity on the finish. Drink 2026 -2045

The 2020 Barolo is a pretty powerful wine in this peer group. Accordingly, it is going to need a few years to come into its own. Macerated cherry, licorice, lavender, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco emerge gradually, but only with great reluctance. Hints of rose petal, mint and cinnamon linger. Drinking Window:2024-2032

The Oddero family presented an impressive range of 2020 Barolos. Harvest started on October 7. The 2020s saw between 18 and 26 days on the skins. Some lots saw submerged cap maceration, depending on the wine. Time in cask was 18 months for the 2021 Barbaresco Gallina, 22 months for the straight Barolo and about 26 months for the vineyard designate Barolos. What I admire most about the Oddero Barolos today is how they express contemporary classicism.
