The 2020 Barolo Villero offers up blue fruit, lavender, spice, mint, new leather and grilled herbs. Brisk acids and veins of tannin confer freshness. It will be interesting to see if the 2020 softens in bottle. Today, it is decidedly nervous. Even so, the Villero has real palate presence and notable explosive energy. Drinking Window: 2026 – 2040

The nose is a tangy explosion of sour red fruits and cherry candy, with fresh bay leaf and green herbs jumping out of the glass like a jack-in-the-box. Brace yourself for a well-structured palate that’s as firm and taut as a high-wire act. But don’t worry, the flavors are so tasty, you’ll be doing a happy dance with every sip. Get ready to embark on a thrilling journey as you try this now or over the next two decades.
The Oddero family presented an impressive range of 2020 Barolos. Harvest started on October 7. The 2020s saw between 18 and 26 days on the skins. Some lots saw submerged cap maceration, depending on the wine. Time in cask was 18 months for the 2021 Barbaresco Gallina, 22 months for the straight Barolo and about 26 months for the vineyard designate Barolos. What I admire most about the Oddero Barolos today is how they express contemporary classicism.

Showing more tobacco, leather, cranberry and freshly-tilled soil, this is a bolder style of Nebbiolo. The Oddero 2020 Barolo Villero has an interlude of sweet cherry and plump fruit, but then it veers toward tart fruit flavors followed by fine powdery tannins. Smoothness is a theme that continues throughout. It ages in large French oak casks and spends six months in cement vat to better integrate. Production is 6,000 bottles.
Mariacristina Oddero is currently working to enlarge her historic winery that was built at the beginning of the 1800s. That space is now used for aging her reds. She has also introduced a new wine, a Barolo Monvigliero, from a 0.7-hectare parcel acquired in Verduno in 2017. Starting in 2023, Oddero also unveiled two Vermouthsa red one based on Nebbiolo and a white one based on Timorasso from the Colli Tortonesi.
