The 2023 vintage of Jean-Philippe FichetsBourgogne Cte d’Or Blanc Vieilles Vignes is a striking testament to the finesse and purity that Fichet brings to even his most humble appellations. Sourced from old vines rooted in limestone-rich soils, this wine punches well above its Bourgogne classification, offering a refined and expressive Chardonnay that captures the essence of Meursaults terroir without the price tag.
Nose:
The aromatics are vivid and tightly focused, showcasing citrus blossom, green apple skin, and crushed oyster shell. With some air, more complex notes emerge: white peach, lemon curd, and a delicate thread of hazelnuta subtle nod to its Meursault proximity.
Palate:
The 2023 vintage displays impressive energy and clarity. The attack is lively, with a racy backbone of acidity supporting flavors of Meyer lemon, tart pear, and flinty minerality. Theres a gentle creaminess on the mid-palate, likely from extended lees contact, but no overt oaktrue to Fichets restrained and terroir-driven style. The finish is long, saline, and refreshingly mouthwatering, leaving a chalky echo that invites another sip.
Pairing Suggestions:
Ideal with seared scallops, roasted chicken with tarragon, or a simple goat cheese tart. Also a standout on its own with a cool evening and a good conversation.
Burghound 87-89:
(also from Meursault vines but from soil with more gravel and rock content). This is similar to the Bourgogne chardonnay but with noticeably better aromatic layering. The old vines are in evidence on the palate of the medium weight flavors as there is markedly better density as well as surprisingly good power, at least in the context of what is considered typical for the genre, all wrapped in a lingering, sappy and balanced finale and this is excellent for what it is and recommended.
Winery: Both plots are planted on clayey-limestone soil. “Les Millerands” is at the limits of the Meursault village while “Les Pellands” is the only Burgundy appellation located on the edge of the first “Les Charmes” wines. “Les Pellands” thus offers an exceptional site, worthy of the great Meursault wines.
From the very first this Vieilles Vignes white burgundy offers a frank and deliberate attack, revealing its more complex aromas later. To the nose, acacia and honeysuckle give way to an exquisite concentration, with light notes of citrus fruits. This white Burgundy can obviously stay in your cellars for a few years before being consumed.
