95 pts John Gilman – View from the Cellar
“The very, very old vines that make up the Les Delys 1926 bottling have absolutely excelled in the excellent vintage of 2023. The wine comes in at an even fourteen percent octane and offers up a very deep and refined, black fruity nose of sweet dark berries, cassis, a hint of pomegranate, espresso, bonfire, spit-roasted gamebird, a complex base of dark soil tones and a topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and extremely elegant in profile for young Morgon, with a deep, old viney and sappy core of fruit, stunning soil signature and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and absolutely seamless finish. These ancient vines have produced such a perfectly balanced wine in 2023 that one might be tempted to drink it on the early side, but there is so much still here to unlock that it will border on a crime to open a bottle before it is eight or nine years of age! 2031-2075+. (Mar/Apr 2025)”

The 2023 Morgon Les Dlys Vignes plantes en 1926, aged in foudre, offers a full-bodied profile with a seamless integration of tannic structure and concentrated fruit. On the palate, notes of chocolate spice, licorice, blueberry and ginger unfold smoothly, voluminously coating the mouth with a rich, almost waxy texture. The smooth-coated tannins aptly stabilize the wine in perfect proportion to the wine’s body. Herbaceous, mentholated accents emerge, adding freshness and complexity to the wines lingering finish. Drink Date: 2026 – 2034
The discreet Daniel Bouland took over the family estate in the 1980s and now cultivates around nine hectares of vineyards in Morgon, Chiroubles and the Cte de Brouilly. Most of these vineyards are planted with old vines, some dating back to 1926, as in the Les Delys cuve. The three hectares of vineyards are farmed conventionally but with attentive work by hand-tying the goblets to protect them from sun and hail. Bouland employs whole-cluster fermentations lasting the better part of two weeks, followed by maturation for up to nine months in foudres or tanks, with only small dosages of SO2 added after malolactic fermentation. The wines are deliberately crafted with an intellectual focus, prioritizing the structural intricacies of the terroirs over sheer exuberance. That said, the 2023s marked a notable progression in fluidity compared to 2022, with brighter, more refined fruit and tannic structures operating as forces in concert.

A great tasting note I found on this wine the goes into how this wine is a BEAST in youth!(link)
Humming like an idling V8 engine, its always deep and chewy when youngbuilt for long aging in the cellar. The 2023 is saturated with blue and wild berry fruits underscored by cracked pepper and cardamom spice, liquorice root and forest floor complexity. The palate is infused with unstoppable velvety fruitiness and length of flavour rare for the region. Bouland admits that if he could find the grafting materials he needs, he would start to replant this ancient parcelit yields too little juice for his liking. Just as well he cant: this is one of the greatest single-vineyard wines in all of Beaujolais.
