An exquisite wine and one of the greatest examples of the vintage that I encountered during my journey in the region, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz exhales a deep, powerful bouquet of lilac, dark cherries, garrigue, dark wild berries, lead pencil and flowers. It’s full-bodied, pure and crystalline, with a deep, multidimensional core of fruit, vibrant acids and a long, sappy finish. This blend of 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah, crafted from vines planted on sandy soils in the parcel of Les Cassanets, is a strong candidate for the wine of the vintage. WA
The beautifully situated 44-hectare estate, sitting on the northeast part of the appellation in the commune of Courthezon and close to Ch. Rayas, continues its qualitative journey, producing precise, perfumed and well-structured wines since Sylvie Pouizin and Jean-Denis Vacheron took over. After Jean-Deniss accidental death in 2022, Sylvie brought on technical manager Bruno Gaspard, who has made and continues to make a significant contribution to the estate. Certified in organic viticulture since 2010, the vineyard is planted with a combination of authorized grape varieties, all thriving in sandy, sandstone soils that contribute to the wines elegance and finesse. Joined by her daughter Marilou and son Axel, Sylvie Pouizin-Vacheron (and her family) expanded their holdings by acquiring Domaine de Panisse, a 13.3-hectare estate in Chteauneuf-du-Pape. Despite the inevitable changes brought by the different generations, Le Clos du Caillou has consistently produced wines of finesse and complexity, closely aligned with consumer preferences, while maintaining their intensity and distinct personality. In my opinion, some of the best Ctes-du-Rhne and Chteauneuf-du-Pape are crafted here.

More closed and reticent, the 2022 Chteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz reveals a deeper ruby/plum hue as well as remarkably purity in its black cherry and assorted darker berry fruits as well as black peppery, black olive, licorice, and violets aromas and flavors. Absolutely gorgeous on the palate, it’s full-bodied and has a deep, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. JD
The Vacheron Family, along with winemaker Bruno Gaspard, make some of the regions finest wines. Located on the border of Chteauneuf du Pape, in the Courthezon region of the appellation, the estate covers 25 hectares, and they release a bevy of brilliant Chteauneuf du Pape as well as Ctes du Rhnes. While I thought the 2020s were slightly challenging here, it looks like the 2021s are rock-solid and as good as anything in the vintage, while the 2022s look to be a return to richer, more concentrated, powerful wines that hold onto a beautiful sense of balance and purity.
